"Bob Marley and his group the Wailers had just started their first American tour. They had played at concerts in Boston, and New York in July. And now in October they were in Los Angeles for a recording session at Capitol Records studios in Hollywood. During the half hour interview, Marley did not utter one line about anything musical. He talked rapid fire, in his thick Jamaican accent that was barely intelligible to me about his belief in and devotion to Rastafarianism. He hailed Haile Selassie and the 1920s Black Nationalist leader Marcus Garvey as his heroes. Much of this was foreign to me. I listened enthralled at his discourse, and was mesmerized by his tangle of flowing twisted coarse hair......"
