Betty Shabazz


The Widow Of Malcolm X, Dr. Betty Shabazz, Died On This Date In 1997, At The Age Of 61.


Dr. Shabazz Was Trapped In A Fire Set By Her 12 Year-Old Grandson, Malcolm Shabazz, In Their Apartment In Yonkers, New York. Shabazz Died Three Weeks Later, From 3rd Degree Burns Covering 95% Of Her Body.

Shabazz Was Born Betty Jean Sanders On May 28, 1936 In Detroit, Michigan. She Was An Adopted Child Who Grew Up In A Fairly Sheltered, Middle-Class Household. She Attended Tuskegee Institute In Alabama.

She Left Tuskegee And Moved To New York City To Escape Southern Racism, And Enrolled As A

The National Association Foe The Adnancement Of Colored People  (NAACP) Was Incorporated On June 20, 1911, In New York.


On February 12, 1909, Six Blacks, Most Of Them Former Memebers Of The Short-Lived Niagra Movement, And 47 Whites Founded The National Association For The Advancement Of Colored People (NAACP).

W.E.B. DuBois, Who Served The Organization For 20 Years, Was The NAACP's Only African American Officeholder During The Early Years. It Wasn't Until 1920 That James Weldon Johnson Became The First Black Executive Secretary.

The NAACP's Stated Purpose Was To Attain Nothing Less Than Full

Juneteenth

Juneteenth, Also Known As Freedom Day Or Emancipation Day, Is An Annual Holiday Or Holiday Observance In 28 States Of The United States. Celebrated On June 19, It Commemorates The Announcement Of The Abolition Of Slavery In Texas. Juneteenth Is The Oldest Known Celebration Commemorating The Ending Of Slavery In The United States.


Dating Back To 1865, It Was On June 19th That The Union Soldiers, Led By Major General Gordon Granger, Went Into Galveston, Texas With News That The Civil War Had Ended And That The Slaves Were Now Free. Note That This Was Two And A Half Years After

Eldridge Cleaver

On June 18, 1954, Eldridge Cleaver Took His First Trip To Soledad Prison On A Marijuana Possession Charge.

The Former Convict Went On To Become A Major Civil Rights Activist And Leader In The Black Panther Party. He Served As The Group's Minister Of Information.

Eldridge Cleaver Was orn On August 31, 1935, In Wabbaseka, Arkansas. His Family
Moved To Phoenix, And Finally To Los Angeles, Where Cleaver, In His Teens, Would Become Involved With Petty Crime.
In 1957 He was Convicted Of Assault With Intent To Murder.

James Weldon Johnson Was Born June 17, 1871, In Jacksonville, Florida.

In November, 1900, James Weldon Johnson And His Brother, John Rosemond Johnson, Composed The Song, "Lift Ev'ry Voice And Sing," Generally Known As The Black National Anthem.

Author And Educator James Weldon Johnson Served As General Secretary Of The NAACP From 1920 - 1930, Resigning To Teach Creative Literature At Fisk University. Johnson Was The First Black Executive Secretary Of The NAACP.
