December 26 Marks The First Day Of Kwanzaa, A Uniquely African American Holiday That Was Conceived During The 1960's By Dr. Maulana Ron Karenga, A Professor At The University Of California.
The Name Kwanzaa Derived From The Kiswhili Phrase, Matunda Ya Kwanzaa, Which Means First Fruits And Is Used To Refer Harvest Celebrations In Africa.
Kwanzaa Lasts For Seven Days. Each Day Is Designed Around Nguzo Saba, Or Seven Principles, Based On African Values.

Umoja: Unity
Kujichagulia: Self-Determination
Ujima: Collective Work And Responsibilty

Jabbo Smith:
Cladys Jabbo Smith Was Born On December 24, 1908, In Pembroke, Georgia.
He
Began Playing Trumpet At Age 10 And After Running Away From An
Orphanage At Age 17, He Went To Philadelphia To Play Professionally.
One
Of America's Pioneer Jazz Music Innovators, Smith Was Billed As A Rival
To The Great Louis Armstrong During The 1920's And 1930's.
He Played With Several Bands During His Career, Including The Eagle Eye Shields Band, Charlie Elgar, Tiny Parham, Carl Dickerson, Charlie Johnson's Paradise Ten And The James P. Johnson Orchestra.

Patricia R. Harris:
On December 21, 1979, Patricia Roberts Harris Was Named Secretary Of Housing And Urban Development (HUD), By President Jimmy Carter. She Was The First Black Female Cabinet Member.
In 1979, Patricia Roberts Harris Was Appointed Secretary Of Health Education And Welfare By President Jimmy Carter.
Upon Her Appointment In 1965, As Ambassador To Luxembourg Under The Lyndon Johnson Administration, Harris Became The First African American, Female Ambassador.
She Was Elected Permanent Chairman Of The Democratic National Convention In The Early 1970's.

Max Robinson:
Max Robinson, America's First Black Broadcast News Anchor, Died On December 20, 1988.
Born
In Richmond, Virginia, In 1939, Robinson Began His Career In 1959, At A
Television Station In Portsmith, VA. He Eventually Went To Washington,
DC And Worked For Three Years At Station WRC-TV, Where He Became An Award-Winning Civil Rights Journalist.
After Seeing Robinson In A Documentary On 60 Minutes, TV Executive, Roone Arledge, Hired Him To Co-Anchor The Chicago-Based ABC "World News Tonight." He Held That Position From 1978 -1983.

"The Father Of Black History," Dr. Carter G. Woodson Was Born On December 19, 1875, In New Canton, Buckingham County, Virginia.
As
A Scholar, Author, Educator And Historian, Dr. Woodson Worked To Make
Sure That The Accomplishments Of Black People To America And The World,
Were Recoginzed And Not Forgotten. To That End, He Created What Is
Known Today As Black History Month, In February, 1926.
He
Chose February To Coincide With The Birthdays Of Frederick Douglass And
Abraham Lincoln, Two Figures Who Impacted The Lives Of African
Americans.
