Walker's Appeal:

Abolitionist Writer, David Walker Was Born On September 28, 1785, In Wilmington, North Carolina, To A Free Mother And Enslaved Father.

Walker Is Most Famous For Writing And Publishing The Militant, Anti-Slavery Pamphlet, Walker's Appeal, in Four Articles; Together with a Preample, to the Coloured Citizens of the World, but in Particular, and Very Expressly, to Those of the United States of America, January 18, 1820.

William C. Handy:

William Christopher Handy Puplished "Memphis Blues" On September 27, 1912 And Gave The World Its First Uniquely African American Music Form. The Song Was Originally Written For Edward H. Crump's Mayoral Campaign.

Known As The Father Of The Blues, Handy, Was A Trained Musician Who Made Blues "More Respectable" And Mainstream. The Music Had Traditionally Been Heard In Brothels, Saloons, Train Yards And The Back Streets Of The Mississippi Delta.

Handy Was Born November 16, 1873, In Florence, Alabama. He Died March 28, 1958.

Bessie Smith:

The Woman Known As The  Empress Of The Blues, Bessie Smith, Died On September 26, 1937, In Mississippi, From Injuries Sustained In An Automobile Accident.

Smith Was The Top Blues Singer Of The Post-World War I Era And Widely Regarded As The "Dean Of Female Blues Singers."

She Started Performing As A Teenager -- Going On Tent Tours With Ma Rainey And Other Traveling Minstrel Shows. By The 1920's Smith Was Playing Music Halls To Popular Acclaim.

In 1923 She Recorded Her First Hit, "Down Hearted Blues." The Record Sold Over Half A Million Copies In Six Months.

Satchel Paige:

On September 25, 1965, Black Baseball Legend, Leroy Robert "Satchel" Paige Pitched Three Innings With The Kansas City A's.

This Particular Game Was Extraordinary Because Paige Was In A Rocking Chair And Had A Nurse In The Bullpen Waiting To Massage His Pitching Arm. And At The Time, He Was The Oldest Player In Major League History.

Known For His Wit He Titled His Autobiography, Maybe I'll Pitch Forever.

Paige Had An Incredibly Long Baseball Career. He Played 22 Years In The Negro Leauges And Played More Than 18 Years In The Major Leagues, Beginning In

On September 24, 1977, Ku Klux Klan Member, Robert Edward Chambliss (Also Known As "Dynamite Bob"), Was Indicted And Charged With Murder For  The 1963 16TH Street  Baptist Church Bombing, In Montgomery, Alabama.

Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carol Robertson And Cynthia Wesley Were The Four Young Black Girls Killed When The Church Exploded.

 A Witness Identified Robert Chambliss As The Man Who Placed The Bomb Under The Church Steps On September 17, 1963.   He Was Arrested
