Nelson Mandela:

Political Activist, Nelson R. Mandela Was Born On This Date. In 1918, At Mvezo, A Village In Umtata, Transkei, South Africa.

On April 27, 1994, After Years Of Oppression Under White Minority Rule,

Black And White Citizens In South Africa Had Their First Democratic Election, Selecting Nelson Mandela As The Country's First Black State President.

Before His Presidency, Mandela Was A Leader In The African National Congress (ANC) And A Dedicated Anti-Apartheid Activist.

In 1963 He And Other Members Of The ANC Were Brought To Trial. He Was Sentenced To

Miriam E. Benjamin's Gong & Signal Chair:

Black Inventor, Miriam E. Benjamin Was Awarded A Patent On This Day In 1888 For The Gong And Signal Chair For Hotels.

Using A Rod-Activated Signal, This Chair Was Designed To Summon Waiters To A Patron's Table.  The System  Worked By Pressing A Small Button On The Back Of The Chair Which Would Relay A Signal To A Waiting Attendant. At The Same Time, A Light Would Illuminate On The Chair, Allowing The Attendant To See Which Guest Was In Need Of Assistance.

Benjamin's Innovative Chairs Were Installed In The U.S. House Of Representatives

Charles Drew:

Today In 1944, Dr. Charles Richard Drew Was Awarded The NAACP's Spingarn Medal

"for his outstanding work in blood plasma. Dr. Drew's research in his field led to the establishment of a blood plasma bank which served as one of the models for the widespread system of blood banks used by the American Red Cross."

As Noted On The Award Citation, Dr. Drew Developed The First Blood Banks In The United States, As Well As Set Up England's National Blood Bank System During World War II.

He Was A Brilliant Clinical Scientist Who Won Nummerous Awards In The 1940's
