Althea Gibson:

On July 6, 1957, Althea Gibson Won Both The Women's Singles And Doubles Titles At Wimbledon, England. In Doing So, She Became The First African American To Play For And Win These Major Tennis Championships. She Won Them Again In 1958.

In 1950, Gibson Was The First African American To Play In A U.S. Lawn Tennis Association Tournament. She Was The First Black Female

Arthur Ashe:

Arthur Ashe Defeated Jimmy Conners To Win The Men's Singles Title At Wimbledon, England On July 5, 1975.

He Remains The Only Black Male To Win A Men's Singles At Wimbledon, The U.S. Open Or The Autralian Open.

He Is One Of Only Two Black Men To Win A Grand Slam Singles Event (Yannick Noah Is The Other). Ashe Was Also The First Black Male To Join The American Davis Cup Team (1963).

Besides His Achievements In Tennis, Ashe Devoted Time To Helping Young Black Athletes Develop Their Skills And Wrote A Hard Road To Glory, A Book That Profiled African American

Author And Activist, Charles Waddell Chesnutt Received The NAACP's Spingarn Medal On This Date In 1928 For His

 "pioneer work as a literary artist depicting the life and struggle of Americans of Negro descent, and for his long and useful career as a scholar, worker and freeman in one of America's greatest cities."

Chesnutt Was A Master Short Story Writer From Fayetteville, North Carolina. His Paternal Grandfather Was A White Slaveholder. Chesnutt, Himself, Looked White  But Lived His Life As A "Voluntary Negro," A Term Applied To Fair-Skinned Blacks Who
