July 2, 1882, Denmark Vesey, A Carpenter Of West Indian Origin, Was
Hanged, Along With Five Co-conspirators, For Planning A Slave Rebellion.
For
Four Years, Vesey, A Free Black, Had Been Organizing More Than 1,000
Slaves And Stockpiling Weapons And Ammunition, To Take Over Charleston, South Carolina On The Second Sunday In July, 1822.
Authorities
Learned Of The Plot Before Hand, From Two House Slaves. In The End, 36
People Were Executed And Many Others Were Kicked Out Of The State.
The Vesey Conspiracy Disproved The Theory That Slaves Were Docile, Passive Beings

A Scholar, Author, Educator And Historian, Dr. Woodson Worked To Make
Sure That The Accomplishments Of Black People To America And The World,
Were Recoginzed And Not Forgotten. To That End, He Created What Is
Known Today As Black History Month, In February, 1926.

On June 28, 1935, Mary McLeod Bethune, One Of America's Greatest Educators And Activists, Was Awarded The NAACP's Spingarn Medal.
The
Daughter Of Former Slaves (Samuel And Patsy McLeod), Mary Bethune Was
Born July 10, 1875, In Mayesville, South Carolina. She Was One Of 17
Children.
Growing Up She Worked In The Cotton Fields Of South Carolina. She Eventually Made Her Way Through College (Scotia Seminary, Near Concord, NC), Got Married (To Albertus Bethune), And Had A Son.

Paul Lawrence Dunbar:
On This day In 1872, Paul Lawrence Dunbar Was Born In Dayton, Ohio.
The Son Of Former Slaves, Dunbar Became A Prolific And Popular Turn-Of The-Century Writer. Booker T. Washington Dubbed Him "Poet Laureate Of The Negro Race."
Dunbar Was Most Widely Known For ("Negro") Dialect Poetry, Although He Favored His Standard English Writings.
His First Volume Of Poetry, Oak And Ivory, Was Published In 1892, With The Help Of His Friends Orville And Wilbur Wright.
His 1896 Collection, Majors And Minors, Won Critical Acclaim, And In 1901 His Novel, Sport Of

Paul R. Williams:
On June 26, 1953, Paul Revere Williams Was Awarded The NAACP's Spingarn Medal For His Work In Architecture.
In The 1930's Williams Designed The Saks Fifth Avenue Department Store In Beverly Hills, California. During The 1940's He Executed Alterations And Additions To The Beverly Wilshire Hotel. The Landmark Building, Located On Wilshire Blvd., Is Considered One Of The World's Finest Hotels.
Williams
Also Built Many Plush Hollywood Dwellings In Bel Air And Beverly Hills,
Including Homes For Lon Chaney, Lucille Ball, Cary Grant, Danny Thomas
And Frank Sinatra.
