The National Association Foe The Adnancement Of Colored People (NAACP) Was Incorporated On June 20, 1911, In New York. On February 12, 1909, Six Blacks, Most Of Them Former Memebers Of The Short-Lived Niagra Movement, And 47 Whites Founded The National Association For The Advancement Of Colored People (NAACP).W.E.B. DuBois, Who Served The Organization For 20 Years, Was The NAACP's Only African American Officeholder During The Early Years. Juneteenth, Also Known As Freedom Day Or Emancipation Day, Is An Annual Holiday Or Holiday Observance In 28 States Of The United States. Celebrated On June 19, It Commemorates The Announcement Of The Abolition Of Slavery In Texas. Juneteenth Is The Oldest Known Celebration Commemorating The Ending Of Slavery In The United States. Dating Back To 1865, It Was On June 19th That The Union Soldiers, Led By Major General Gordon Granger, Went Into Galveston, Texas With News That The Civil War Had Ended And That The Slaves Were Now Free. Note That This Was Two And A Half Years After

James Weldon Johnson Was Born June 17, 1871, In Jacksonville, Florida. In November, 1900, James Weldon Johnson And His Brother, John Rosemond Johnson, Composed The Song, "Lift Ev'ry Voice And Sing," Generally Known As The Black National Anthem. Author And Educator James Weldon Johnson Served As General Secretary Of The NAACP From 1920 - 1930, Resigning To Teach Creative Literature At Fisk University. Thurgood MarshallOn June 13, 1967, Thurgood Marshall Became The First Black Supreme Court Justice --- Appointed By President Lyndon B. Johnson. At The Time Of His Appointment, Marshall Was Solicitor General Of The United States. Many Years Earlier He Had Been Awarded The NAACP Spingarn Medal For His Work As A Lawyer Before The Supreme Court.
