Medgar Evers

On June 12, 1963, NAACP State Field Secretary, Medgar Wiley Evers, Was Shot In The Back By A Single-Round From A High-Powered Rifle, In The Driveway Of His Jackson, Mississippi Home. He Died An Hour Later.

Medgar Evers Was The First Major Black Civil Rights Leader To Be Murdered During The 1960's. The Deaths Of Malcolm X And Martin Luther King, Jr. Would Soon Follow.

For 10 Years He Was Involved Civil Rights Causes, Including A Boycott Campaign Against White Merchants And Was Instrumental In Eventually Desegregating The University of Mississippi, When That Institution Was Finally

Congressman Charles Rangel Was Born On This Day In 1930, In New York City.

The 78 Year-Old Rangel Is Serving His 19th Term As The Representative From The 15th Congressional District, Comprising East And Central Harlem, The Upper West Side And Washington Heights/Inwood.

He Is The Chairman Of The Ways And Means Committee, Chairman Of The Board Of The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee And Dean Of The New York State Congressional Delegation.

Congressman Rangel Is A Founding Member And Former Chairman Of The Congressional Black Caucus. He Was Also Chairman Of The New York

Hattie McDaniel, The First Black American To Win An Academy Award, Was Born On June 10, 1895 In Wichita, Kansas.

On February 29, 1940 Hattie McDaniel Won The Oscar For Best Supporting Actress For Her Role As Mammy In The 1939 Film, Gone With The Wind

McDaniel Began Her Career On The Vaudeville Circuit. An Excellent Blues Singer, She Was The First Black Woman To Sing On Radio. She Starred In The Beulah Series On Both Radio And Television.

During The 1930's And 1940's, McDaniel Acted In Over 70 Films. Her Roles Were Nearly All The Same---The Supportive And Outspoken "Mammy" Type, Which She

Johnny Ace


One Of The Early Black Pioneers Of Mainstream Rock 'N Roll, Johnny Ace, Was Born June 9, 1929, In Memphis, Tennessee.

Born John Marshall Alexander, After Serving In The Navy During World War I, Alexander Joined Adolph Duncan's Band As a Pianist. He Then Joined The B. B. King Band, Which Also Featured Bobby Bland. King Left For Los Angeles And Bobby Bland Joined The Army. Alexander Took Over Vocals And Renamed The Band The Beale Streeters -- Also Taking Over King's WDIA Radio Show.

In 1952, John Marshall Alexander Became Johnny Ace. He Signed With Duke Records In 1952.

A'Leilia Walker

A'Lelia McWilliams Walker Was Born On June 6, 1885 In Vicksburg Mississippi.

A'Lelia Was The Only Child Of Sarah Breedlove -- More Commonly Known As Madame C.J. Walker -- Who, After Being Abandoned By Lelia Father, Became A Washerwoman And Later An Entrepreneur Who Built Her Empire Developing Hair Products For Black Women. She Became The Country's First Female, Self-Made, Black Millionaire.

Walker Grew Up In St. Louis, Missouri, And Attended Knoxville College in Tennessee Before Going To Work For Her Mother.

She Helped Her Mother Establish The Mme. C. J. Walker Mfg. Co. In
