Langston Hughes

 

On May 22, 1967, One Of The Most Prolific American Writers Of The 20th Century Died. Langston Hughes Died In New York City While Working On A New Collection Of Poetry That Was Later Published As "The Panther And The Lash."

Hughes' Career Spanned From The Harlem Renaissance Of The 1920s Through The New Black Renaissance Of The 1960s.

His First Volume Of Poetry, The Weary Blues, Was Published In 1926 And His First Book Of Short Stories, The Ways Of White Folks, In 1934.

Hughes' Novels, Poetry, Plays And Short Stories Were Central To The Transition

Clarence " Big House" Gaines

College Basketball Legend, Clarence "Big House Gaines," Was Born On This Day In 1923.

A Native Of Paducah, Kentucky And 1945 Graduate Of Morgan State University, Gaines Found His Way To Winston Salem, North Carolina. He Became The Football, And Later, Basketball Coach At Winston Salem State University.

He Built One Of The Strongest And Most Competative Basketball Programs In The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). Conference. Among His Former Players Are NBA Hall-Of-Famer, Earl "The Pearl" Monroe And ESPN Commentator And Columnist, Stepehen

Toussaint L'Ouverture

Haitian Revolutionary, Patriot And Martyr,  François-Dominique Toussaint Louverture, Was Born May 20, 1744, In The Plaine Du Nord Of What Was Then Saint-Domingue.

He Was A Self-Educated Slave, Freed In 1791,  After Marrying At Age 33.

As Unrest Shook Saint-Domingue's Iinstitutions, Toussaint Joined The Spanish Army Of Santo Domingo.  As A Gifted But Untrianed Military Leader, He Was Able To Organize 4,000 Blacks Into A Band Of Loyal Guerrilla Troops.

When The French Legislative Assembly Decreed Full Equality To All Haitians On April 4, 1792, Toussaint Switched his Loyalty

Malcolm X

El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, A.K.A. Malcolm X, Was Born On May 19, 1925.

Born Malcolm Little, The Former Drug Dealer, Thief And Convict Converted To The Islamic Faith While In Prison. He Would Become The Black Muslims' Most Eloquent Prominent And Controversial Spokesman During The 1950's And 1960's.

His Messages Of "Black Self-Reliance" And Justice Without Compromise Made Him A Symbol Of The Black Revolution Of The Early And Mid 1960's.

He Was Read Out Of The Black Muslims After Describing The Assassination Of President John F. Kennedy As " Chickens Coming Home To Roost." He Formed The

Isaac Burns Murphy

Isaac Burns Murphy Won The Kentucky Derby On This Day In 1884. Riding The Horse, Buchanan.

Six Years Later He Won The Kentucky Derby Again, Riding A Horse Named Riley. And The Very Next Year (1891) He Rode The Horse, Kingman, To Victory.

Murphy Was The First Black Jockey To Win The Kentucky Derby Three Times. He Won The American Derby And The Latonia Derby Five Times Each. At The Time, These Two Events Were Considered More Illustrious Than The Kentucky Derby.
