The Booker T. Washington
National Monument

The Booker T. Washington National Monument Was Founded On July 28 1957, Though It Wasn't Opened To The Public Until 1963.

The Site Is The Birthplace And Early Childhood Home Of One Of America's Most Notable Black Educators. It's Located On Virginia Rt. 122, 16 Miles Northeast Of Rocky Mount, Virginia. It Was The Second National Monument Honoring A Black American.

The George Washington Carver National Monument  Was Dedicated July 14, 1951, In Joplin, Missouri, And Was The First National Monument Dedicated To An African American.

Garrett A. Morgan

Black Inventor, Garrett Augustus Morgan Became A National Hero On July 25, 1916.

On That Date, He And His Brother Donned Gas Masks And Personally Led A Rescue Team In Pulling Out Over 30 Workers Who Had Been Trapped After An Explosion In Tunnel No. 5, At The Cleveland Water Works.

The Morgan Safety Hood, As The Mask Was Called At One Time, Was Also Used During World War I.

Morgan's Gas Mask Was Patented On October 13, 1914. Calling It A Breathing Device, Garrett Morgan Wrote In His Patent Application No. 1.113.675:

Kenneth B. Clark

Psychologist, Educator And Social Activist, Kenneth Bancroft Clark Was Born On This Date In 1914

A Native Of Harlem, Clark Attended Howard University And Columbia University. He Became Columbia University's First Black Psychology Ph.D Recipient In 1940.


He Began Teaching At New York City College
In 1942, Becoming The School's First BlackPermanent Professor. He Served As Visiting Professor At Columbia, Harvard And The University Of California, Berkeley, But Remained At City College Until His Retirement In 1975.

He Became The First African American On The New York State Board

On July 22, 1939, Jane Matilda Bolin Was Sworn In As The First Black Female Judge In The United States. Mayor Fionello La Guardia Appointed Her Judge Of The Court Of Domestic Relations In New York City.


Born April 11, 1908, In Poughkeepsie, New York, Bolin Was The First African American Woman To Graduate From Yale Law School, The First To Join The New York City Bar Association, And The First To Join The City's Law Department.

She Was A Member Of The NAACP, The New York Urban League, The New York County Lawyers Association And The Harlem Lawyers Association.

Prior To Her Death In
