Ralph Abernathy

Civil Rights Leader, Ralph David Abernathy Died On This Date In 1990, In Atlanta, Georgia.

Abernathy Was Born In Linden, Alabama, On March 21, 1926, The Son Of A Farmer.

He Served In The Army During World War II, And Afterwards, Attended Alabama State University. He Earned A Mathematics Degree In 1950. A Year Later, He Got His Master's In Sociology From Atlanta University (Later Known As Atlanta Clark University).

He Became An Ordained Minister In 1948 And Eventually Became The Pastor Of The First Baptist Church In Montgomery, AL.

She's A Writer, Movie Director, Actress, Danceer, Playwright And Poet. However, Maya Angela Is Probably Best-Known For Her Five Autobiographies. The First And Most Famous Of These Is I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, Published This Day In 1970.

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings Is A Classic Of 20th Century Feminist Literature. It Was Also The First Book Written By An African American To Appear On The National Bestseller Lists.

Diahann Carroll

On April 15, 1962, Diahann Carroll Starred In Richard Rodgers' No Strings --- Becoming The First African American In The Romantic Lead Of A White Broadway Musical.


Carroll Became The First Black To Be The Lead In A Television Program, When Julia Aired In September, 1968. In 1976 She Had Her Own Variety Series, The Diahann Carroll Show.

During Her Career Diahann Carroll Appeared In Several Television Shows And Movies. Porgy And Bess, Paris Blue And Claudine (For Which She Was Oscar-Nominated) Are Among These. During The 1980's She Took The Role Of Dominique Deveraux On The

Music Executive, Barry Gordy, Incorporated The Motown Records Corporation On April 14, 1960, In Detroit, Michigan.

Originally Called Hitsville, USA, Gordy, Started The Company With An $800 Loan From His Family. A Former Boxer, Record Store Owner And Factory Worker, He Chose The Company's Second (And Most Famous) Name, Motown, From Black Slang Used To Identify Detroit's Importance As A Center Of Automobile Manufacturing.

The Man Known As The "Soybean Chemist" Was Born On This Day In 1899, In Montgomery, Alabama.

Percy Lavon Julian, Who Received His Ph.D In Organic Chemistry From The University Of Vienna, Used Soya Beans For Several Of His Important Discoveries.

For Example: From Soya Beans Julian Developed A Synthetic Form Of The Pain Killer, Cortisone, A Drug Widely Prescribed To Arthritis Sufferers. His Discovery Also Made The Drug More Affordable For Patients.

Julian Used Soybeans To Make A Fire-Smothering Foam That Was Used During World War II, To Extinguish Fires On Board
