Michelle and Barack Bumpin' Fists

Posted by bamgibbs in Untagged

Once again, the media is grasping at straws to come up with a story on Barack Obama.  Why is the bumping of fists between the democratic presidential nominee and his wife a BIG DEAL?

It says two things:  Some journalists don’t seem to have a clue as to what real news is anymore.   It also points out the lack of experience many reporters have when it comes to reporting.  Instead of focusing on the admiration Michelle Obama was showing for her husband, they chose to focus on bumpin’ fists between the two as something mysterious and a possible code for something else.  WHATEVER!  Get a clue---take a racial interpretive language class.  And while you’re at it, attend a black church on occasion to get a sense of what really goes on there.

#2:  Newsrooms in America lack some serious diversity---especially when it comes to management.   I know this from first hand experience because I never worked in a newsroom that had an African-American News Director.

If Michelle clicks her heels three times the next time we see her on stage, will this be interpreted as her desire to go to Kansas or is that a hint that she’d like to be “knockin’ boots” with her husband?

When a Woman Loves a Man: My Anniversary

Posted by bamgibbs in Untagged

Today, June 3, my husband and I are celebrating our second anniversary.  People who know us think we've been married for many years.  Sometimes it feels that way.  We've been through A LOT in a short period of time. But I can tell you that I'm even more in love with him today that I was yesterday---but it won't be as much as tomorrow (I know that's a song)!

Every now and then I reflect on my previous marriage.  OH boy!  Did I think I had found Mr. Right back then.  But as the years went on, I realized I had fallen in "lust" and not "love."  When the sexual attraction fizzled out, there was nothing left.

As I take a moment to reflect today, I find it interesting that ten years ago, I would've never given my current husband a second look.  We are so opposite.  But what I've come to realize and appreciate is:  he's everything I'm not.  he makes up the missing pieces to the puzzle of a happily-ever-after.

Today I am so happy to say that my real prayers were answered.  I  have a wonderful, new husband whom I love, admire and respect.  It makes lusting after him EVEN BETTER!

I’m just a baby boomer in love!

The Legacy of Hillary Rodham Clinton

Posted by bamgibbs in Untagged

When the Democratic Presidential Primary campaign began more than a year ago, I was excited over the idea that America had a chance to make history. In spite of the number of candidates in the race, I was certain Hillary Clinton would be in the running. In spite of the rumors that circulated about her as First Lady, I was still rooting for her as a fellow baby boomer woman. I have shown her no ill will.

BUT---

With the help of the media, Senator Clinton has turned into a ruthless, vindictive, politician. Riding on her husband’s coat tails, she attempted to pimp the Black vote. When that didn’t work, she turned her backs on them and went for the whites with no education. (That’s how she referred to the reason why she won in West Virginia and Kentucky)

She has been a chameleon throughout this campaign---changing her campaign strategy to whatever will win her votes. And what is alarming even more so is the way some fellow baby boomer women are behaving about this campaign. I have read nasty posts from women who threaten to vote for the Republican or not vote at all if Hillary doesn’t win the nomination.

Yes, I do believe she has been unfairly depicted on occasion. There have been some awful things said about her by the male press but when she turns around and gives them more ammunition to work with, what is one to think? To bring up the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy as a reason to stay in the race is ludicrous and suspicious.

So what will be

The Tulsa Race Riots Anniversary

Posted by bamgibbs in Untagged

Today marks the anniversary of the worst race riots in our nation’s history.  It was known as the Tulsa Riots of 1921.

The trouble began on May 31, 1921 when a young black man named Dick Rowland was accused of assaulting a white girl named Sarah Page in an elevator. Although police questioned her, there was never a written account produced of her statement.  Whatever the conversation was between Page and the police, it is generally accepted that the police decided that what had happened between the two teenagers was something less than a serious assault.  In any event, the police did not launch a man-hunt for her alleged assailant.  They apparently knew who they were looking for, but they felt no great urgency.

Whether or not an actual assault had occurred, Dick Rowland had reason to be afraid.  In those days, just an accusation of an assault on a white woman might incite violence.

The morning after the incident, Rowland was located, booked on suspicion of assault, and taken to an interrogation room on the top floor of the Tulsa County Courthouse for questioning.

AND THEN THE MEDIA GOT INVOLVED….need I say more….

By late morning, news of the event had apparently reached the Tulsa Tribune. The newspaper broke the story in that afternoon's edition with the headline: 'Nab Negro for Attacking Girl In an Elevator', describing the alleged incident.    It was, however, another article in the same paper that is credited with providing the misinformation which sparked

Sex and the City: Idolizing Four Sluts

Posted by bamgibbs in Untagged

I guess I should say right off the top that I didn't actually see the movie.  But even if I wanted to, I couldn't have because all three shows were sold out last night.  My husband and I went to see Iron Man with Robert Downey, Jr., Terrence Howard and Jeff Bridges.  (If you want to read my review of THAT movie, go to:  http://www.boomerworld.blogspot.com)

I was never a fan of the HBO Series.  I may have seen an episode or two but it didn't appeal to me.  Maybe it was because I couldn't identify with the characters and what they were all about.  Maybe if they had decided to cast a black female character, I would've tuned in to check it out.  It's my understanding there was never a black face on the show at all.

Anyway, as my husband and I were leaving our movie, we saw a line out the door for the next showing of Sex and The City.  There were young girls standing anxiously to get inside the theater.  (Yes, there were actually two young men in the line as well).  What was surprising to me was the way they were dressed.  Many of them wore sexy and revealing outfits with spiked heels.  I thought that was rather odd but then I overheard a white woman, about my age, walking in front of us commenting to her husband on the attire.  She thought it was crazy that those young girls were so into the characters that they chose to dress like them.  She said, "How sad that they would want to idolize four sluts."

I think I have to agree with that.
