    When I decided to go natural, I quickly realized that braid extensions would be the easiest and most convenient way for me to grow my hair out as quickly as possible. Braid extensions are a great way of growing the hair because the ends are protected, there's very little maintenance or manipulation to the hair, they provide excellent access to the scalp, and they generally last for several weeks.  But, if braids are not applied and taken care of properly, they will definitely do more damage than good.

            Many people don't realize that braid extensions are coated with a chemical

   I remember when I first decided to go natural. I confided in my friend and she asked me why I wanted to do something like that and what would I do with my hair? At the time I wasn't sure what I would do with it, but the look on her face told me she did not approve and it totally discouraged me from even attempting to go natural. It took me two years after this conversation to get up the nerves to start transitioning; this time I didn't ask anyone's opinion nor did I reveal my plan to anyone.

After being natural for a few months, I continuously heard things like, "See, you can wear your hair

  Many women desire to have longer hair, especially African American women, but are convinced it's just not in the cards for them. Reality is that with a little information and some extra TLC, an additional inch or even an additional 10 inches of hair growth, is very possible.

On average hair grows approximately .5" per month; give or take. This includes African Americans as well. Hair has a growing phase of 2-6 years; so if hair is given optimal care, ideally, the person with the shortest hair will have 12" of growth, which isn't bad. But the average person doesn't have the shortest growth

      When my daughter was born, she didn't have a bunch of hair. By the time she was 2, it seems as if she had even less. She suffered from eczema causing all of her hair to fall out, except a little poof at the top of her head. (That's  her...this was BEFORE it was at it's worse) She also had extremely dry, fragile, thin sandy brown hair! I just knew that this poor child would always be bald and forever suffer the stigma of being the girl with itsy bitsy pigtails.

As my daughter turned from a baby to a toddler, I did everything to try to grow her hair back. She was getting taller and bigger;

Young black man sadTechnically these 5 things can destroy the future of any young person trying to have financial success in America, but since we are writing for The Black Man Survival Guide we want to focus particularly on the obstacles as they relate to our young black men.  We already know that as African Americans we face many inequities in the US to include police harassment, institutional racism and in the case of the Trayvon Martin shooting, death at the hands of vigilante (in)justice.  We recently wrote a piece on  10 Corporate and Government Policies that Unfairly Punish Black Men that focuses
