Black Family Day is the premier cultural event in Rockingham County initiated by Amon Muhammad, the Reidsville Rep. of the Hon. Min. Louis Farrakhan & the Nation of Islam. The rural city government did not accept the program at its inception and fought against Muhammad, and those with him. Muhammad & supporters rallied against the opposition and eventually filed suit in federal court for civil rights violations. The city ultimately was forced to yield to the community’s desire in 2000, suffering embarrassment. The event has been held downtown since that time. Included are day of workshops, gospel, R&B, Hip-Hop, spoken word artists, spiritual & civic leaders. Vendors from all over the region bring arts, crafts, and products of interest to the Black Community. Ethnic and Traditional menus are on hand in the food village. Children’s activities are also plentiful. The Family Fun village will feature a 22’ super slide, kiddie swings, berry-go-round, crawl-throughs, and a moon bounce. This year Black Family Day partners with Thankful Heritage Traveling Museum to bring a special historical display of Black history from the before the Middle Passage to the present. Attendees of Black Family Day will be able to visit the museum on site.
About The Black Family Day Foundation Formed in 1996 to address the critical needs of the Black community of rural Rockingham County, The Black Family Day Foundation (BFD Foundation) hosts functions to inspire, motivate, teach and train the public in activities of self-improvement.
