Hello iZania Community,

One of the most rewarding experiences in life is helping a child or young person find direction and purpose in their life. Mentoring relationships have made a big difference for many of us. Passing along the lessons we learn in life produces benefits for mentors and mentees. We have supported National Mentoring Month from the beginning of our community. Please join us in the richly rewarding experience.

National Mentoring Month--a large-scale public service campaign conducted in collaboration with some of the nation's largest media companies and leading nonprofit organizations -- is entering its 7th year of focus on this vital element of communities. The campaign's goal is to recruit volunteer mentors to work with children who are at risk of not leading healthy, productive lives. Research has shown that introducing a mentor into a young person's life can play a powerful role in preventing drug abuse and youth violence, while greatly enhancing a young person's prospects for leading a fulfilling and productive life. Mentoring programs in communities across the country have waiting lists of young people seeking to be matched with volunteer mentors.

We are highlighting National Mentoring Month at iZania with three initiatives:

Who Mentored You? (http://www.izania.com/forums/showthread.php? t=1790) -- Growing up, were there people in your life who encouraged you, showed you the ropes, and helped you become the person you are today? Think about family members, a teacher or coach, a neighbor, a boss, or family friend; those people were mentors to you.
Mentor and Mentee Stories (http://www.izania.com/forums/showthread.php? t=1791) -- Do you have a special relationship with a young person that you would like to share with our community? We are featuring the stories on our website.
Thank Your Mentor Day™ (http://www.izania.com/forums/showthread.php? t=1792) - January 24, 2008 will mark the fifth annual "Thank Your Mentor Day," which many mentoring programs select as a day of volunteer recognition. An outreach of the Harvard Mentoring Project, its message is:

Too many young people do not have an adult mentor to provide encouragement and support;
Mentoring programs can provide the link to this support; but
Programs need volunteers to close the gap.

We are providing an opportunity for members of our iZania Community to participate in this activity. Please click here to Thank Your Mentor (http://www.izania.com/forums/showthread.php? t=1792).
