Are you celebrating Kwanzaa this year?

Kwanzaa is an African American and Pan-African holiday which celebrates family, community and culture. Celebrated from 26 December thru 1 January, its origins are in the first harvest celebrations of Africa from which it takes its name. The name Kwanzaa is derived from the phrase "matunda ya kwanza" which means "first fruits" in Swahili, a Pan-African language which is the most widely spoken African language.

we have been celebrating kwanzaa for about 6 years now and each year we get better and more involved. this year we are gathering with some friends for a feast and party, taking gifts and food to a sister of ours who is in the hospital, gathering at a workshop for children, hosting a kwanzaa celebration at an open mic and making gifts for our family with our children.
it is such a blessed addition to our lives! i look forward to kwanzaa because it has so many beautiful and meaningful rituals that help my children learn about the importance and relevance of holidays (holy days) and the beauty of Afrikan culture.
happy kwanzaa black folks!

Talking Re: Are you celebrating Kwanzaa this year?

Yes, we are. My youngest son's birthday is today and this makes for another reason for us to gather together and celebrate unity on this first day of Kwanzaa. He's 10 and starting to realize the importance of family, togetherness and heritage.

We watched a couple of videos that I found online (and stored in my web host account ). If you'd like to see them, just right click and "save as" to your system to view.

I might've heard the word kwanzaa a couple times at most in my life.
Never knew what it meant.
I see.
