Exclamation Rhoda Wilson attends 2012 Global African Diaspora Summit in South Africa

In May 2012 The South African Government invited Rhoda Wilson to attend the Global African Diaspora Summit founded by The African Union. As a well-respected television talk show host of Nigerian origin, Rhoda is passionate about representing the African Diaspora in a positive and effective light.

As 2012 is the 10th anniversary of the launch of the African Union, The Global African Diaspora Summit is historically significant. It is also the year in which South Africa celebrated the centenary of the oldest liberation movement on the continent, the African National Congress. The summit consisted of 54 African Heads of State, Presidents and Prime Ministers from the 16 Caribbean countries, as well as Presidents from Latin America with a high number of civil society leaders from the African Diaspora. Rhoda Wilson was one of only 2 specially invited guests from the UK diaspora who after being rigorously researched, were invited to represent their countries of origin.

“Towards the Realisation of a United and Prosperous Africa and its Diaspora” was the central theme of the summit. Its main aims included creating sustainable partnerships between the African Diaspora and the African Continent, creating sustainable dialogue, partnerships and strengthen Pan-African Solidarity and the promotion of cross border cooperation.

When His Excellency Ambassador Andrew Gbebay Bangali, The Sierra Leonean High Commissioner to South Africa, asked Rhoda if she realised that she was “part of history it” truly sank in. The Global Diaspora Summit was a tremendous success. With so many crucial dialogues and a purposeful programme of events, the summit engaged delegates with key questions and active solutions needed to fulfil its aims.

The Draft Declaration of the Global African Diaspora Summit highlights the actions that the heads of state and governments of the Africa Union, the Caribbean and South America need to put in place to achieve success.

Rhoda Wilson has been invited by a number of heads of states, ministers to help them to achieve these actions using her media access to promote their countries.

“As I return to the UK, I feel privileged and grateful to the South Africa High Commission to London for this warm invitation. I look forward to promoting Africa”. – Rhoda Wilson
