Default Harvard Offering Free Tuition

This program at Harvard is targeting poor children. Our children are disproportianately poor. It would be wonderful to challenge poor Black children to aspire to one of the highest regarded institutions in our country.
If you know of a family earning less than $40,000 a year with an honor student graduating from high school soon, Harvard University wants to pay the tuition. The prestigious university recently announced that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families can go to Harvard for free...no tuition and no student loans!
To find out more about Harvard offering free tuition for families making less than $40,000 a year visit Harvard's financial aid web site at: or call the school's financial aid office at (617) 495- 1581.

Question Re: Harvard Offering Free Tuition

I hate to take a negative view about something that seems so good, but I can't help but wonder if Harvard is setting up our Black children for failure.

I like the concept that Harvard is willing to accept low-income students and pay their tuition. But there are a few things that disturb me: 1). A lot of low-income families live in areas where the schools are no up to par. If this is the case, a student, at such a school, who graduates with honors is still somewhat behind. If they go to Harvard, which has some of the highest standards in the country, will that student be successful? Not only are our children disproportianately poor, but we are also behind economically, technologically, and EDUCATIONALLY. 2). What happens to that student who graduates from High School with honors, goes to Harvard, is ostracized socially, and drops out of school? How does this student rebound?

I like what Harvard is trying to do, but, as I said, I can't help but wonder about their motives...

My 2 cents.
