Black Dynasty Soap Opera Airs On Baltimore Station |
| http://BlackDiamondCinema.com The Raven is the nation's first African American nighttime pilot episode to air on a network station. On January 12, 1981 from 11:30pm-12:30am the one-hour pilot episode for the first black "Dynasty" soap opera aired on WJZ-TV in Baltimore, Maryland. The same network affiliate that gave Oprah Winfrey her big break as a talk show host on People Are Talking. The Raven featured a predominately African American cast starring in roles of power, affluence and position. The show went up against a James Brown special on a rival station and Saturday Night Live on another. The Nielsen ratings showed a tie with James Brown but beating out Saturday Night Live for the entire one-hour time slot in predominately white demographics. Wrtten, Produced and Directed by Darryl Edric Pugh, Sr, and produced by wife and partner Renee' W. Pugh the pilot made television history that night in Baltimore. |
