This is an excellent essay. You have challenged and exposed a great human weakness. We seek comfort in some degree of certainty, while at the same time expanding the boundaries of our knowledge. Each theory we put forward -- about the origin of the universe, or our place in it -- seeks an anchor in the comfort of what we believe, and faces challenges about the possibilities before us.

This weakness has a tremendous negative impact on the relationships we have with those with whom we share this planet. True freedom would encompass sharing all that we discover with everyone else. Yet we choose to engage in life and death struggles with those who believe something different.

Whether evolution or creation, our cognition seems to require an intellectual compass to steer us along the path of discovery. Most importantly, as you point out, we should proceed with the recognition that there is more that we don't know than we know. For me, this is what makes the journey of discovery exciting. - Roger Madison Jr.
