Curtis Jewell’s unique ability to combine entrepreneurship, innovative solutions, and commitment to community service has resulted in a rich and rewarding life. Mr. Jewell’s professional and private life is defined by the organizations he has founded and continues to manage as well as the wide array of charities and public services he supports with his time, energy, and resources. The cornerstone of Mr. Jewell’s enterprise is EXCEL Management Systems, Inc. Mr. Jewell saw a great future in information technology. He founded EXCEL in 1989 to provide technology solutions that keep you a step ahead. EXCEL provides optimum information technology solutions with services that include field-based technical support, network management, software and database development, document management, and program management services. Mr. Jewell’s practical, affordable solutions have enabled EXCEL to grow to over 100 employees at four locations. In 1994, Mr. Jewell established the Jewell Group LLC, which owns commercial and residential property holdings in Columbus, Ohio; Harlem, New York; and Ft. Myers and Riviera Beach, Florida. The Jewell Group purchases properties in need of rehab, uses local tradespersons to renovate the properties, and offers the revitalized buildings back to the community. The outcome of this approach has been profitable for both the Jewell Group stakeholders and the communities. Mr. Jewell became the majority stockholder in J.B. Chart Development Company LLC in 2004. There he has led the development of residential housing targeted for low income families. In 2005, he joined forces with Viking Yacht, which was selected to serve as master developer for a $1.6 billion renovation project to span 15 years in Riviera Beach, Florida. This effort will renew and reclaim an otherwise declining area of Florida. Mr. Jewell’s deep sense of history and culture led him to serve as a board member and Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC). NBPC is a non-profit organization that commissions, acquires, and awards grants to producers and directors of quality film and video projects that reflect the African American and the African Diaspora. Partnering with the Corporation of Public Broadcasting, NBPC is the only organization that focuses on memorializing the African American experience through film and video. Mr. Jewell’s leadership has brought him many awards including finalist for Business First and the Greater Columbus Chamber’s Small Business Person of the Year, the Fast Fifty List of Emerging Companies, finalist for Columbus and Central Ohio Entrepreneur of the Year, and Who’s Who in Black Central Ohio. While Mr. Jewell’s initiative, drive, and determination have given him great business and financial success, it is his values and leadership that distinguish him among peers. Mr. Jewell has the head of an entrepreneur, the creativity of an artist, and the heart of a public servant.
