National Civil Rights Organization Joins With Specialty Finance Company to Address Issue of Lack of Access to Credit
The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and CompuCredit Corporation (NASDAQ: CCRT) today announced a wide-ranging partnership aimed at addressing problems facing America's financially underserved population.
The partnership, announced at SCLC's Annual Convention as part of the organization's 50th anniversary celebration, is an extension of SCLC's ongoing Economic Empowerment Initiative. As announced in November, that initiative includes an examination of ways to address the urgent issue of helping more Americans access credit through improving and maintaining higher credit scores.
"Millions of Americans today remain outside the financial mainstream -- whether un-banked, under-banked, red-lined, 'sub-primed' or otherwise cut off from access to the financial products and services they need," said Dr. Charles Steele, Jr., President and CEO of SCLC. "They come from all walks of life, but they are disproportionately African-American, Hispanic and moderate-income. Consistent with SCLC's historic commitment to civil rights and economic justice, this partnership represents a critical part of our campaign for economic empowerment."
Dr. Steele continued, "We should never forget Dr. King's words regarding economic justice. He said, 'Our struggle is for genuine equality, which means economic equality.' That struggle continues today at SCLC. We are pleased to join with CompuCredit to address the real issues regarding lack of access facing so many Americans. We seek not only to educate and inform, but also to help consumers gain access to the kinds of financial products and services they need for their financial empowerment."
"We are honored to be partnering with SCLC on this important initiative," said David G. Hanna, CEO and Chairman of CompuCredit. "We look forward to working with SCLC as together we address the issue of improving access to credit."
The partnership will include the following components:
-- Community education: SCLC and CompuCredit will jointly conduct a series of regional workshops on financial empowerment and issues related to building and maintaining credit-worthiness -- including local public officials, clergy and business leaders -- across the country, with the support and participation of SCLC's local chapters; -- Economic literacy: SCLC and CompuCredit will produce and distribute a printed and on-line guide to economic literacy and financial empowerment; -- SCLC credit card: Beginning in 2008, SCLC will issue an SCLC-branded credit card, which will be marketed by CompuCredit. Consumers requiring credit enhancement will be offered the opportunity to enroll in a credit card that includes a "graduation" program, marketed by CompuCredit, through which consumers gain better payment terms as they establish a positive payment history.
SCLC and CompuCredit announced their partnership during SCLC's 49th Annual Convention, held at the Marriott Atlanta Marquis from August 3-8, 2007. SCLC also celebrated the opening of its new international headquarters building on historic Auburn Avenue in downtown Atlanta.
